Symantec PartnerNews

Q. My customer has multiple backup products and wants to have a consistent way of reporting. Do you have anything that can help us?

A. Veritas™ Backup Reporter is a single backup reporting tool that can provide reporting on Veritas NetBackup™, Symantec BackupExec™, Veritas Netbackup PureDisk™, IBM® Tivoli® Storage Manager, CommVault Galaxy® and EMC Legato® Networker. Reports such as backup success, restore times, amount of data backed up, etc can be run on an ad hoc basis or scheduled to run and be distributed via automatic emailing of them on a regular basis. More information on Veritas Backup Reporter can be found here.

Q. How do I license the NetBackup Server to backup guest servers in VMware?

A. If you want to backup the guest operating systems you need a license per operating system type. For example:

  • If you have 10 x Windows® 2003 guest servers in VMware you only need the one client.
  • If you have 2 x Windows NT4, 2 x Windows 2000 & 2 x Windows 2003, you will require 3 x Windows clients, one per operating system type. The same applies for database agents.
More information on Veritas NetBackup 6.5 can be found here.
Q. I would like my customer who is currently a Corporate AntiVirus user to consider an upgrade to a current license. It seems that Symantec Endpoint Protection is their natural upgrade path. I want to determine how I obtain a license as a reseller to on-sell at retail price, and also advice on the best Symantec product to consider.

A. Requiring less system resources and less memory than Symantec AntiVirus™ 10.0, Symantec™ Endpoint Protection 11.0 is the next generation of antivirus technology and offers at least three additional layers of proactive threat protection in a single agent:

1) Antivirus
Antivirus provides the ability to accurately clean up and remove viruses and malware found on a system.

2) Client Firewall and Intrusion Prevention
Client firewall and intrusion prevention work at the network layer to block threats before they get onto the system from the internet.

3) Application Control
Application control allows administrators to build a clean system and then “snapshot” critical files and applications so that they simply cannot operate if they ever get compromised.

4) Proactive Threat Scan
Proactive Threat Scan analyses every process, service and program on the system to ensure that any suspicious, rogue behaviour is blocked from doing damage, and it achieves this with complex mathematical analysis, instead of traditional antivirus signatures which need constant updating. What’s unique about this technology from Symantec is the absence of false-positives, which can cause annoyance or downtime for systems and users.
